Child Neglect, Abuse and CPS
Day after day, there are cases of child neglect in Alphabet City,
The foster care system is very prevalent in this along with Child Protective Services.
The inner city is full of parents and guardians who arenât looking after their children,
Where kids arenât taking baths for days at a time, wearing the same clothes day after day and other things.
Kids arenât eating and are malnourished, kids missing school for days at a time,
Due to them being forced to take care of their families instead of getting an education in school.
Have there been cases where my fellow officers are called to the school or home? Yes.
Is it scary and concerning in so many ways? It definitely is.
Teachers and faculty have to make certain decisions on a childâs well-being daily,
They have to do reports on children they see as troubled from a safety and wellness standpoint.
There are times we are called in and the parents havenât been home in days,
Or a parent is on drugs and out in the streets for days and sometimes weeks at a time.
These kids sometimes have no other family members to go live with,
So theyâre taken out of the home and put in the foster care system.
Sometimes siblings get separated and now kids are alone in this fight,
With no one to advocate for them and while I want to be part of that fight, I have a job and obligations to do for the police department.
There are children who are in need of love and care but donât get it,
These are the same children who grow up and go in the wrong direction.
They are the same children who become teens and adults that I have to put handcuffs on,
Do you see how this cycle goes with child neglect in neighborhoods like ours in todayâs world?
CPS and our police department do all that we can to protect the children of Alphabet City,
But we canât get to every case, it's an overload for CPS and Iâve seen it when I go to their offices.
We do have relationships with CPS bosses and managers,
The thing is, once we are able to take the child out of the home, itâs no longer in our hands unless the law is involved.
Unfortunately, we have to testify in family court and watch children be taken away from their parents,
Itâs something that isnât talked about and discussed enough in the inner cities of America.
As a detective, Iâve walked into homes where parents have physically abused their children,
To the point where theyâre bloody, battered and bones are broken.
Itâs a scary thing to see and process in your mind,
These are the cases that keep me up at night the most, not necessarily the murder cases.
The kids where you have to calm their fears and build their trust,
Theyâve already been taught not to trust us but now theyâre fearing for their lives with their families.
There are so many situations we deal with on a regular basis,
Whatâs shown on television is the constant violence and drug dealing, not the other issues that plague the inner city.
